The portraits were made on the Khyber Mail, a Pakistani mail and passenger train that travels from Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and ends in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city at the southern tip of the Sindh province on the Arabian Sea. The train journey involves 35 hours of travel.
My favorite portrait is of Joman, an 80 year-old Sufi. He is from Nowabshah, Sindh Province, and has two wives and twelve children. He has been a beggar all his life.
Sam Phelps has a background of fine arts study in Sydney, and is now increasingly working with NGOs including the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, as well as taking assignments for clients including Der Speigel, Time, Newsweek Pakistan and the Times UK. He is also a registered photographer with Getty Images Global Assignment.
He traveled the mountainous roads to Leh, the capital of Ladakh in northern India, and photographed the lives of people along the route. He undertook a four day trip on a train meeting and documenting pilgrims' experiences traveling from Tehran through northern Iran, across Turkey and south to the Syrian capital of Damascus to pray at the Umayyad, the Great Mosque of Damascus.

Having an HVAC service man in to inspect your furnace and ducts can prevent issues while you're away. Clearing the area around your furnace and heating vents of any obstructions or combustibles as a safety precaution is always a good idea. - Window and Door Check
make sure to inspect windows and exterior door every season. Check for cracked and/or chipped windows. Consider replacing old weather stripping and old caulking around all windows and doors. Replacing roof tiles or shingles as necessary will prevent from water/ice from forming in areas it should not reach. Make sure to clear out gutters and downspouts to ensure that runoff will be properly distributed away from the house and foundation. - Foundation Check
Do a 'walk around' of entire structure and ensure foundation has no cracks. Some mice can enter cracks no thinner than a dime! Check ill plates for rot or infestation. Make sure to re-seal any brick patios, driveways or wooden decks. Trim all tree branches that are very close to the residence or nearby electrical lines. Protect any air conditioning condensing units with a waterproof, breathable cover. - Fireplace/Chimney Check
After ensuring the chimney is free of any bird, squirrel or other animal nests - consider installing a chimney screen to prevent animal or bird entrance during the winter months. Double check that the chimney flue damper is operating efficiently. A flue should open and close completely and be able to lock in either position. Consider having a professional chimney sweep clean the fireplace chimney. After years of use - they can become blocked with possible debris, ash or creosote.

We believe that our life in Manzanillo, Mexico defines "the American dream". We have a beautiful 4000 sq. ft. house with a garage, pool and gardens ON the beach. A house like this, at this time, can be built or purchased for just under 1 million dollars. Imagine that in Seattle or Los Angeles.
We have a wonderful lady who does our cleaning and ironing, and a young man who takes care of the pool, garden, and other things we need done. We pay about 200.00 dollars a week for both of them.
There is no "honey do" list to fight over. It is taken care of for us. The first week we were here, one of our neighbors said, "we in Mexico do not do much for ourselves". She is of course from the upper end of the economic scale, but, I have often thought about how true those words are.
So how do we spend our days? What do we do? I remember asking a lady on a plane who was on her way down to Mexico for the 6 months of winter." What do you do all day? " The obvious answer is, whatever we want.
It is the opportunity to figure out what you really want out of life, and do it. We have people who take up art at 50 or older and become accomplished artists. We have groups of women and men golfers several days a week as a social occasion as well as exercise. We have tennis groups and bridge groups. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer with the children, the old folks, the dogs, or individual families. With each year we have more opportunities, such as the availability of the latest books with e-readers, on-line classes to improve your mind, body and or life, newspapers, of course, are on line. And the best part of our small town is that most of us have time for one another. We are very social (those who want to be) because we have time and not a lot of distractions.
We do have a "Gold's Gym" as well as several others. And an ocean that is warm all year. One of the best parts for me is the weather. I am from Seattle where it is often cold and dark (sorry). Here, it is possible to go outside almost every day. The first summer we were here I was learning to play golf and praying for rain. We only missed six days of golf due to rain. It rains mainly at night, like in Hawaii.
12 years ago we started two groups to help foreigners get to know each other, as we live all over, not congregated in one place. The first was a lunch group for English speaking ladies. We meet once a month and have speakers to keep the rumor mill on track and keep us educated on what is happening in our town. This group is called mujeres amigas, "women friends".
The second group is for couples and meets every week for early dinner and drinks at different restaurants. They are the manzamigos.
Between these two, it should be possible to get to know many of the other ex-pats in a short time.
We have great restaurants with reasonable prices, a big movie theater with 8 or more movies playing. Usually about half of them are in English with Spanish sub-titles. We have a Walmart and Soriana, and Commercial Mexicana for big grocery and department stores. We even have Starbucks and Burger King.

The causes of the Israel Palestine conflict are complex. In fact the very question is a bit of an oxymoron. Consider that before Israel existed the entire area was known as Palestine, not a state, not a nation, but a region of the former Ottoman Empire under the administration of the British authorities by mandate of the now defunct League of Nations.

Material girl Madonna will perform at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi on June 3 and show organiser Flash Entertainment has confirmed that 22,000 tickets are available for sale.
Flash said the tickets would go on sale at midday on February 27 for the June 3 show and urged fans to buy early to avoid disappointment.
With an average of 41,000 fans attending each show of Madonna’s last tour in 2008/9, the company is preparing for one of the fastest selling shows in the city’s history, a statement said.
Madonna’s concert weekend is expected to draw tens of thousands of fans to Yas Island, the statement said.
In recent years, the city has successfully positioned itself as the entertainment hub of the Middle East with the 2009 opening of Yas Island, where the first ever day/night Etihad Airways Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was staged.

In 2011, the Yas Arena saw over half a million people through its doors to see performers including Aerosmith, Shakira, Beyonce, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Britney Spears, Metallica, Janet Jackson and Arabic Megastar Amr Diab.
In all, the Arena has hosted over 50 artists and 23 shows in the past three years, the statement said.

"Bon Odori, meaning simply Bon dance is a style of dancing performed during Obon. Originally a Nenbutsu folk dance to welcome the spirits of the dead, the style of celebration varies in many aspects from region to region. Each region has a local dance, as well as different music. The music can be songs specifically pertinent to the spiritual message of Obon, or local min'yo folk songs. Consequently, the Bon dance will look and sound different from region to region. Hokkaidō is known for a folk-song known as "Soran Bushi." The song "Tokyo Ondo" takes its namesake from the capital of Japan. "Gujo Odori" in Gujō, Gifu prefecture is famous for all night dancing. "Gōshū Ondo" is a folk song from Shiga prefecture. Residents of the Kansai area will recognize the famous "Kawachi ondo." Last year, the Bon Odori 2011 was held at the parking area beside Plaza Angsana, Tampoi - Johor Bahru. It was really corwded when we were there on the evening...
This is a yearly event and it was flooded with Japanese foods and games. My daughter like the knocking game very much! Haha!
We decided to have our dinner in the event, and too many food booths around that really make us confuse! Finally, we chose the Kinsahi booth just because of they had full of variety...
Beside that, there were many food stalls around the area too....like the Japanese Restaurant from Crystal Crown Hotel Johor Bahru also participated...
While we enjoyed our Japanese foods, the Japanese Drum Performance started on the stage at the middle of the parking area...
Then followed by another group...
There were many performances by different groups that night, honestly...I like the Drum Performance very much! Like listen to Kitaro music...haha!
And it was different from the Chinese Drum that I watched before...

Travel News Kolkatas Cult of Durga
I'm glad Tony Smith has now produced an audio slideshow of his work during the Kolkata's Cult of Durga Photo Expedition/Workshop. The software he used to produce it is ProShow Producer, rather than SoundSlides that I normally use on my workshops. His audio slideshow is divided into chapters or segments which coincied with the different phases of the Durga Puja festival.
Tony is an Associate member of the Royal Photographic Society, and he traveled to Nepal, Bhutan, India, France, China, Spain, Morocco the USA and Canada and the West Coast of Ireland. He has attended Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and Gypsy religious and secular festivals..
He worked quite hard during the Kolkata's Cult of Durga Photo Expedition/Workshop to produce his audio slideshow on the festival; however and much to my disappointment, he has not added to it his narrative skills which are enhanced by his precise enunciation. Perhaps that'll happen in a forthcoming iteration?
In the meantime, I suggest you view his blog entry on his experiences at the Durga Puja during the workshop, which also has a number of his photographs of the festival.
Travel News WTF Dear Travel Photographer

So yes, I got an email from someone assisting a travel photographer (possibly well known, but one I've never heard of...not that means much anyway) who asked me to post a banner and a press release advertising this travel photographer's 2012 photo tours. Yes, you read that correctly...a banner!! A banner of the photographer's photos on my blog!!
There are a couple of rather obvious gigantic WTF?s here.
The first is that I am a travel photographer who creates, plans and leads photo workshops, so why would I want to advertise someone else's trips? Yes, my photo workshops are certainly different from many others, since my niche is in combining documentary photography with travel photography throwing multimedia coaching in the mix, and generic or other travel photography tours wouldn't be real competition, but what's in it for me? Nothing. And why would I endorse photo tours I know nothing of?
The second WTF? is that there was no indication that if I were to do this, I'd be compensated in any way. There was no request for my advertising rates for example, nor an offer to reciprocate the favor on the other photographer's website/blog. No, it's "just do it for free".
I replied, as politely as I could, saying I wouldn't do anything of the sort, explaining why using the simplest words in the English language.
This brings me to a larger question, and one that has been raised by other photographers who author popular blogs.
Here's some statistics: The Travel Photographer's blog gets anywhere between 80,000 and 90,000 unique views a month. PDN's monthly print circulation is 20,000.
If I were to say that ad rates in photo magazines' and their websites are in the $500-3000 range, would I be far from the truth? I don't think so. Of course, rates depend on the size of the ad, frequency, color or B&W...but who reads print magazine these days? Not many, but many more read blogs...a lot more.
So why shouldn't individual popular bloggers expect and get similar revenue streams to advertise products and services? The Travel Photographer blog and other popular photography blogs reach a much larger segment of consumers than most photography magazines, and we are still played for suckers when it comes to adverts.
Travel News Venice In Solitude

His atmospheric photographs of Venice are currently on show at the Hamiltons Gallery in London, which I walk past often when I'm there. Unfortunately, I will not be in London during the exhibition which ends on February 27, so I have to content myself with viewing these online.
It appears that Christopher would set at the crack of dawn with a large format camera, lenses, a tripod and boxes of Polaroid Type 55 to make his photographs.
Christopher has also photographed in Nepal and Ethiopia, amongst other places, so visit his website.

Gulf Air London Flights resumes
Gulf Air, the national carrier of Bahrain, yesterday (February 6) resumed its London flights after snow and freezing temperatures in the UK forced Bahrain's national carrier to cancel its Heathrow operations on Sunday.Around half of the 1,300 flights due to be handled by the airport were called off after around 10cm of snow fell over the UK in 24 hours.
They included two Gulf Air flights to London - one at 1.30am and the other at 10am - as well as the corresponding return journeys.
The airline informed its passengers not to travel to Bahrain International Airport and Heathrow for UK flights on Sunday, but a spokesman said those who did were found overnight accommodation.
Normal operations resumed yesterday, the airline spokesman added.
"The flights at 1.30am and 10am left as usual and on schedule," said the spokesman.
"All backlogs, resulting out of the cancellation of the flights on Sunday, have also been cleared."
